Children’s Classes

Children’s classes offer low class sizes and a flexible creative environment. All materials are provided unless specified and our teaching artists art professionals with full background checks and extensive teaching experience.

Enjoy multi-media workshops including art you can wear, pottery, painting and more! Classes range from 1.5 – 4.0 hour time increments. During your child’s  art class they will  create multiple projects in your theme choice and explore creative problem solving. All classes work on art concepts and building confidence in art skills.

Jump into Art Series 

Jump into art is an exploratory series that teaches kids to think imaginatively and problem solve. Children will improve fine motor skills as they manipulate, cut, bend, sculpt and balance, draw and paint using creative problem solving under the guidance of an Art Lab instructor.

Clay Pictures (5-8 years)

Learn to roll, cut and attach simple shapes in clay. Use these skills to create a plaque sculpted in clay inspired by a drawing done in class. Clay is available to pick up 3-4 weeks after the workshop date.

Imaginary Places (5-8 years)

Let’s talk about landscapes. What is a background, middle and foreground? How can we revisit places in our artwork and illustrate our memories? In this class we’ll sketch places we’ve been and imagine we could go. Children will then create a final artwork with collaged and drawn details.

Creative Constructions (5-8 yrs)

Explore the world of 3-D and create sculptures and constructions using clay, cardboard, felt, found objects, tapes, glue and other materials. An art lab instructor will guide children in planning and creating their own creations.

Clay Pinch Pot Snowmen and Painted Snowflakes (5-8 years)

Little fingers will pinch clay pinch pots into the body of a snowman out of earthenware clay. Paint and glaze your snowman which will be ready for pickup in 2-3 weeks. Also during this workshop, you will paint and bedazzle hanging snowflake shapes.

All You Need is Love (5-8 years)

Valentine’s Day is approaching! Create mini-paintings using stencils and paint inspired by Pop art and culture. Give your paintings as a gift or display them together. Also during this workshop, you will create collage cards that express your love.

Printmaking with Styrofoam (5-8 years)

Learn about printmaking by experimenting with several different ways to create a print using styrofoam. You will also create a collage frame for your favorite print during this workshop.

Drawing and Painting People and Myself (5-8 years)

An Art Lab instructor will help children break down the shapes in a face and help students to layer paint and/or drawing materials to allow everyone to create portraits of themselves, as well as other people or pets they love.

Clay Bunnies and Painted Eggs (5-8 years)

Sculpt a bunny out of earthenware clay and glaze it during the workshop. Clay projects will be ready for pickup within 2-3 weeks. Also during this workshop, you will paint and bedazzle wooden eggs.

Mother’s Day Picture Frames and Tissue Paper Flowers (5-8 years)

Mother’s Day is around the corner. Create a mosaic jeweled picture frame and an artwork for mom to make her feel special. Also during this workshop, you will upcycle a jar for tissue paper flowers made in class.

Let’s talk about parts of a map and create our own maps of our favorite real destinations – both real and imagined!. As time allows, you will also create a stencil city with oil pastels.

My Growing Garden (5-8 years)

Let’s take a look at the shape of Spring flowers, bugs ,and flying insects and create our own garden landscapes in this multimedia class. Students will use sharpies, watercolor and other drawing materials. As time allows, you will create miniature insect sculptures.

Clay Gift Boxes and Surprises (7-12 years)

Build with clay stabs to create boxes with lids in the shape of gift boxes. Include bows or tags in clay and decorate with festive colorful glazes. Create a small clay sculpture for the inside of your box. Stamp gift wrap and collage cards for the holidays. Clay is available to pick up 3-4 weeks after the workshop date.

Recycled Art and Upcycled Mosaics (7-12 years)

During this class, we’ll turn junk into treasures. Spend time constructing with wooden pieces and recyclables. Projects will be assembled with wire and glue. Also during this class we’ll complete a mosaic picture frame that includes additive found object mosaics and traditional glass mosaics. We will discuss recycling and material life spans, as well as artists who use recycled objects in their work.

Sock Monkey and Friends (7-12 years)

Create your own stuffie out of socks, fabrics, and buttons. We will use a variety of hand sewing techniques to create a special handmade friend. Finally, draw or paint a portrait of your stuffed friend – we will focus on breaking down the shapes and drawing the proportions of your stuffie.

Shading and Blending with Pastels and Pencils (7 -12 years)

How do you change a shape like a circle, square, or triangle into shaded three dimensional forms including a sphere, cube and cone? Draw and shade colorful forms as practice. Then we will complete a final project that includes a variation of these forms in real objects, including a cylindrical vase.

Shading and Blending in Paint (7 -12 years)

This class is a great follow up to Shading and Blending with Pastels and Pencils. Using acrylic paint and a slowing medium called retarder we will focus on how to blend paint to create shadows and forms. We will practice shading balls or spheres, and then work on a final painting with fruit that includes shading.

Painted Portraits (7 -12 years)

This class is a great follow up to Shading and Blending in Paint. Students will work on proportions in portraiture including adding shadows. We will do both a practice drawing to find shadows and a final painted portrait on canvas. This class will use acrylic paints and slow drying mediums, including retarder, to give students time to learn to add shadows.

Comical Cartoons and Figures (7 -12 years)

This class is all about figure drawing. Students will start by learning the proportions of figures and how to create gestures or moving people. We will explore facial expressions and put everything we have learned together to make a final comic panel with a character of our own.

Tropical Landscapes (7 -12 years)

As we grow tired of Winter, let’s imagine the tropics, sandy beaches, sea shells, and ocean! With an art lab instructor create a tropical beach landscape painting, as well as pastel tropical toucans and painted sea shells.

Clay Vases and Paper Flowers for Spring (7 -12 years)

In this ceramics workshop, create a wrap around slab vase with pressed or sculpted flower designs. Learn new paper folding techniques and create paper flowers for your vase and another surprise Spring project as time allows. Clay projects will be glazed and will be ready for pickup up 2-3 weeks prior to class.

Famous Artist Series The Impressionists (7 -12 years)

Claude Monet was the father of the Impressionists, a 19th century art movement that focused on capturing the impression of light and the changing landscape. In class we will take a closer look at Monet’s waterlily paintings, Edgar Degas’s dancers and Cezanne’s still lives. In this multimedia class we will paint, sculpt dancers and draw in pastel.

Famous Artist Series The Cubists and Modern Art (7 -12 years)

The cubists, including Pablo Picasso and George Braque, influenced modern art as a whole. In this class we will take a look at cubism and create our own cubist portrait. We will also look at some of modern art’s famous painters, including Helen Frankenthaler, and create tissue paper painting as well as a third modern artist of the instructor’s choice.

Famous Indiana Artist Series The Hoosier Group and Robert Indiana (7 -12 years)

Indiana has its own rich history of artists. The Hoosier group includes famous members including TC Steele and William Forsyth. Learn about these famous late 19th century, early 20th century painters and create your own painted trees. Robert Indiana grew up in Indiana and is well known  for his  Pop art paintings and sculptures including the LOVE sculpture. Create your own LOVE design.

Cancellation Policy

Classes and camps may be cancelled if enrollment does not reach three registrants five days before the class date. You will be notified as soon as possible and a full refund will be issued. Whenever possible we will try and run programs.

One week before the class date, or earlier, class refunds will be issued if needed. However, class refunds will only be issued for class credit within the week before class.
